Creating a Community That Cares
Extra Sandwich Friday began in the fall of 2022 as an initiative created by a Girl Scout troop of fourth-grade students at German School Brooklyn to support migrants moving into New York City.
About Extra Sandwich Friday
A few years ago, Judy and Luisa helped organize a small food drive for our daughters, Alicia and Ida, with the help of German School Brooklyn and other dedicated parents in the community. After such a successful food drive, the school community was so inspired that we continued making and delivering sandwiches every Friday.
Today, we continue to collect sandwiches for an organization called CHIPS in Gowanus to help create nutritious lunchboxes for those in need.

How Students—and Communities—Benefit from Extra Sandwich Friday
Extra Sandwich Friday is so much more than a Girl Scouts task to earn a badge; it is a chance to teach our students and communities about the power of compassion. By participating, we can:
Feed Hundreds of People in Need
By partnering with CHIPS, we’re contributing to lunches for hundreds of people in need in the surrounding neighborhoods.
Teach the Next Generation About Empathy
Exposing our children to this wonderful initiative will show them the power of helping others and how one simple act of kindness can go a long way!
Cultivate a Community That Does Good by Others
By working on this initiative together, we can continue to inspire our communities to do good and care for one another.
